SpongeBob SquarePants (often referred to simply as SpongeBob) is an American animated television series, created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. Much of the series centers on the exploits and adventures of the title character and his various friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The series' popularity has prompted the release of a media franchise, contributing to its position as Nickelodeon's highest rated show, the most distributed property of MTV Networks, and among Nicktoons' most watched shows.[1] As of 2012, SpongeBob SquarePants is the only Nicktoon from the 1990s that has not ended yet. Rocko's Modern Life ended in 1996. Shortly following this, Hillenburg began working on SpongeBob SquarePants. He teamed up with several Nickelodeon veterans and Rocko crew members, including creative director Derek Drymon (Action League Now!, Hey Arnold!, and Rocko's Modern Life) writers and directors Sherm Cohen, and Dan Povenmire[5], writer Tim Hill, actor and writer Martin Olson, animation director Alan Smart (all from Rocko's Modern Life), and story editor Merriwether Williams (The Angry Beavers), who worked on the series for its first few seasons and switched to SpongeBob SquarePants in July 1999. To voice the character of SpongeBob, Hillenburg approached Tom Kenny, who had worked with him on Rocko's Modern Life. Originally, SpongeBob was to be named SpongeBoy, but this name was already in use. This was discovered after voice-acting for the original seven-minute pilot was recorded in 1997. The Nickelodeon legal department discovered that the name was already in use for a mop product. Upon finding this out, Hillenburg decided that the character's given name still had to contain "Sponge" so viewers would not mistake the character for a "Cheese Man". Hillenburg decided to use the name "SpongeBob". He chose "SquarePants" as a family name as it referred to the character's square shape and it had a "nice ring to it". The pilot episode of SpongeBob SquarePants first aired episodes in the United States on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, following the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The first episodes were called "Help Wanted", "Reef Blower", and "Tea at the Treedome". The "official" series premiere followed on July 17, 1999, with the second episode, "Bubblestand/Ripped Pants." The show reached enormous popularity by 2000 during the second season, and has remained popular since. A feature film of the series was released in theaters on November 19, 2004. The series celebrated its tenth anniversary on July 17, 2009. SpongeBob was renewed for a ninth season on January 3, 2011. So far the series has aired 320 individual episodes.

Sometimes, words and phrases get used so much that they become too comfortable. The media gets a hold of them and they become buzz words and the meaning behind the words gets lost. Date rape sometimes seems to be one of them. In fact, I have recently heard some girls tossing around the word 'rape' like it is something funny. But having someone physically force you to participate in a sex act that you do not want to participate in is anything but funny.

As a parent, you need to talk to your kids about date rape. Date rape is forcible sexual activity against a person's will by someone they know. It is common among high school and college age teens and young adults. It often goes unreported and the impact of the experience can be emotionally devastating. Date rape often occurs in boyfriend-girlfriend relationships where one partner is ready for more sexuality than the other is. It often begins with verbal pressure and harassment that often leads to physical coercion.

Yes, you should talk to your daughters and let them know that their bodies belong to them and they have the power to say no when being pressured to have sex. You should talk to them about identifying risky situations and avoiding situations that might result in date rape (getting into a car with a boy they don't trust, going somewhere other than they planned to go with a boy, drinking or accepting a drink they did not pour themselves).

We also need to talk to daughters about misusing the word rape in a joking manner. As devastating as it is for a girl to experience rape of any kind, it can be just as devastating for a boy to be accused of it who has not actually done anything wrong. While it is less common, we also need to talk to our daughters about respecting boys' limits and not trying to force their boyfriends to participate in sex acts that make them uncomfortable. Date rape does happen where the female is the perpetrator.

Talking to teenage boys about date rape should be a similar conversation to the one you have with your daughters: the boys should respect the word no, no matter what has happened up to that point, but they should also have the power to say no if they feel like they are the ones being pressured. It is ok to tell your teen son that it's ok not to have sex.

An area that may be neglected in the whole conversation is that of same sex date rape. Whether both parties are homosexual or they are just experimenting with sexuality, your teens should know that the same rules apply with same sex friends that apply with the opposite sex.

Ultimately, this topic needs to be addressed with both genders. The more we can send a consistent message of respect for boundaries, and the younger we can start addressing respect for boundaries in age appropriate ways, the better kids will be at handling the situations that arise.

Suicide is Forever.

Every 100 minutes another teenager will commit suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people between the ages of 14 to 25 in the United States. The following statistics were taken from a recent survey of college and high school students by the CDC:

* Twenty-seven percent of high school students said they had "thought seriously" about killing themselves during the past year. Eight percent said they had actually tried to kill themselves.

* Ten percent of U.S. college students admitted serious thoughts about suicide. Seven percent had a suicide plan.

More than 30,000 Americans commit suicide each year, and 5,000 of these people are teenagers. Even in societies where suicide is illegal or taboo, people still kill themselves.

Most suicides occur at home between the hours of 3 PM to midnight. There are 30 to 50 times as many attempted suicides as completed suicides.

Four times as many males complete suicide than females, but female teens attempt suicide twice as frequently as male teenagers. We also know that teens from high-income families kill themselves as often as those from poor or middle-class teens.

For every teenage suicide, there are more than 100 unsuccessful attempts. "Copycat" suicides spread the tragedy even further. The behavioral patterns found in the backgrounds of most suicide victims are normal emotions that many teens experience, so it's often difficult to predict who may be at risk.

People who talk about suicide often commit suicide. All talk about suicide should be taken seriously.

People often have opposing feelings about whether or not they want to die, so there is always hope that they can change their minds if they receive professional help. Often those who attempt suicide are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Be aware of this signal. Many attempts are impulsive acts, although it was an option that had been explored.

If you suspect a friend is contemplating suicide, take the initiative and just ask the person, "Are you thinking about killing or harming yourself?" and "How are you going to kill yourself?" This will often get them to talk about it. Be straight with them, get right to the subject. Tell an adult, a teacher, a guidance counselor, or their parents about your concern for your friend's safety. The person may get angry with you initially, but it could save their life.

There is a suicide hotline phone number in almost every phone book and there are international ones on the Internet. For help in the United States, call the Suicide and Crisis Hotline: 1-800-999-9999. The Suicide National Hotline in the U.S. is: 1-800-273-8255.

Some people who are suicidal are very good at hiding their emotional pain, that is why it's okay to just come out and ask if you think someone is hurting on the inside. Very often those people are appearing cheerful and popular on the outside to mask their pain and suicidal thoughts on the inside.

Remember, just because a suicidal person may get professional help and overcome his suicidal feelings, this in itself does not mean those feelings will not return, especially when the person is confronted once again by the stress and the problems that caused him or her to consider suicide in the first place. Teens often feel and think they are immortal.

The numbers are often disturbing to adults, and yet, they only partially convey the tragedy of teen and young adult suicide. Each and every victim leaves behind a void in the hearts of their friends, their schools, and an ongoing ache in the hearts of their families and loved ones. I know, I am one of them.

Giving things away that were once valued

Ending significant relationships or commitments (breaking up)

Some Types of Suicidal Behaviors

About 60% of teen suicide deaths occur using a hand gun. Teen girls attempt suicide far more often than guys (about nine times), but guys are about four times more likely to succeed. Why is this different? Male teens tend to use more deadly methods, like guns or hanging themselves. Girls most often attempt suicide by overdosing with medication or by some form of self-injury. Suicide deaths can occur from medications and other harmful substances, especially if these substances are mixed.

Sometimes a depressed person plans an act of suicide in advance. (Often the planning of an act gives the person some feeling of control). Most often however, suicide attempts are "impulsive acts". These acts occur during a time of feeling overwhelmingly upset. A situation like a breakup, an unintended pregnancy, the death of a sibling, a fight with a parent or boyfriend or girlfriend, being harmed by abuse or rape, or being victimized in any way can cause a young person to feel desperately upset.

"Coming out" for homosexual teens can also lead to suicidal attempts if that person is no longer accepted by their family or friends.

In situations such as these, teens may fear humiliation, rejection, social isolation, or another consequence they think they can't handle. Suicide attempts occur under conditions like this because in desperation and confusion, some teens see no other way out.

Risk Factors For Teenage Suicide:

Previous Attempts -- Teens who attempt suicide remain vulnerable for several years, especially for the first three months following an attempt. These people may become very clever about hiding their true feelings. Keep in contact with them.

Personal Failure -- High standards (the teen's or the parents') that are not met, even after only one setback, may set off a downward spiral ending in suicide.

Recent Loss -- Death of close friends or family, divorce, breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend may leave a teenager so lost and alone that suicide seems the only option.

Family Handguns -- A gun in the house may make it easy for a troubled teen to commit suicide; children of law-enforcement officers have a much higher rate of suicide because of the accessibility of guns. If you think your son or friend is in danger of harming himself, please have someone remove that gun from the home!

Substance Abuse -- Some teens abuse drugs or alcohol to self-medicate overwhelming depression; a combination of depression, substance abuse, and lowered impulse control can end in a suicide attempt. This is often a fatal combination.

Family Violence -- Violence in the home teaches youths that the way to resolve conflict is through violence.

Lack of Communication -- The inability to discuss angry or uncomfortable feelings within the family can lead to suicide. Anger turned inward often leads to depression.

Remember, if someone you know says, "I want to kill myself", or "I'm going to commit suicide", take the statements seriously and immediately seek the help of a trusted adult, such a teacher, nurse, parent or counselor. Call their therapist if you know the

number.

Experts agree it's okay to ask a depressed person if he or she is thinking about suicide. Asking this question provides assurance that somebody cares and might give the young person the opportunity to talk about their problems.

Because AIDS has received so much publicity since the mid-1980s, many people believe they know a lot about the disease. Studies show that teenagers may know more about this than about other sexual topics. Nonetheless, there is still much ignorance about the subject. In Britain, the high level of public anxiety seen in the late 1980s has given way to a different attitude. As figures in the last few years have shown relatively low levels of infection among the heterosexual population, health education campaigns have shifted in their approach. These now focus on high-risk groups such as intravenous drug users, and most teenagers have little opportunity to discuss issues to do with HIV/AIDS.

In spite of this, HIV remains the one STI (sexual transmitted infection) that can cause death, and it cannot be ignored. This may not be so obvious in a country such as Britain, but, it is of course, a very different matter in Africa, in Russia or in the Far East. Even in Britain, there are currently in the region of 2,500 new diagnoses of HIV every year. Because of the treatment approach called 'combination therapy', which uses several different drugs together, many of those infected with the virus are now living longer and more normal lives. However, not all can benefit from combination therapy, and it remains a fact that there is still no known cure for HIV.

There are a number of things young people should know about HIV/AIDS. These are:

- HIV/AIDS is not a homosexual disease. While, in the early years, cases occurred primarily in the homosexual population, today intravenous drug users are particularly at risk, as are men and women having sex with someone who is HIV positive.

- in spite of the success of combination therapy, such treatment cannot eliminate HIV from the body. It is misleading to think that there is now a cure, or that HIV/AIDS is no longer a problem in Britain.

- the HIV virus is transmitted through bodily fluids in the male and female sexual organs, as well as through blood. In addition to transmission through sex, an open cut or sore may be a source through which the virus can enter the body.

Apart from abstinence from sex, the safest protection from HIV is the same as for other sexually transmitted infections, namely the use of a condom.

1.More often than not, breaking up is as hard on the person ending the relationship as it is on the person being broken up with - don't assume just because a person is breaking up with you means that they no longer care about you, caring about you and wanting a relationship with you are not one and the same.

2.Nobody likes to hurt another person, especially somebody they have been close to, and it is often very easy to guilt trip somebody into staying with you when they are trying to end things. Resist this urge! When you use guilt as a way to stop a break up you not only cheat yourself out of having a good and true relationship, you foster resentment in the other person which could lead to greater pain and heart ache in the future.

3.Being broken up with does not mean that there is something wrong with you; it just means that there is something that is not working in the relationship.

Try not to take the rejection too personally. Remember that lots of great people have had failed relationships - the fact that the relationships failed says nothing about their value as a person. The fact that your relationship failed likewise says nothing about you as a person.

4.It is all right to cry, get mad and feel hurt when you are dumped. These are normal natural feelings. Just be sure that you let your feelings out in a safe place among friends or family. Do not make your ex the target of your feelings, even if they have done something to deserve your outrage. The sooner you let go of the other person, the sooner the healing can begin.

5.Breaking up is never easy. You will have good days and you will have bad days. Take it one day at a time and don't beat yourself up if you have an overly emotional day - you're only human after all.

6.Break ups are often followed by one of the parties starting a new relationship and when this happens it can bring up all sorts of old feelings. If you thought you were over someone who broke up with you and find yourself upset at the news that s/he has moved on, rest assured you are normal. Let yourself be upset, it is part of the healing process.

7.Acting out in anger is never good for anybody. After being broken up with don't spread mean or spiteful rumors. Don't betray former confidences by telling old secrets to others. If another person was involved in your break up resist the urge to slam them behind their back. Acting vicious only makes you look bad and any satisfaction you may feel will be short lived. In the end this sort of behaviour will only make you feel worse.

8.A big part of the pain of breaking up comes from a feeling of embarrassment. We often fear how the situation will look to outsiders. Refuse to be embarrassed, even if you did something outlandish to cause your break up. Letting go of the embarrassment will help you move on to the healing.

9.Nobody ever deserves to be hurt. Your ex does not deserve to be hurt because you are hurting. Your ex's new love interest (if one even exists) does not deserve to be hurt just because you feel jealous. You do not deserve to be hurt, even if you acted badly and caused the break up. Breaking up hurts, but it doesn't have to be made worse by holding a grudge or drowning yourself in a pool of if only's. Deal with the reality and let go of your anger, the pain will disappear more quickly if you do.

10.Things may seem bleak now but you never know what the future may hold for you and your ex. You may get back together someday. You may not. Either way it is better to let go of a faltering relationship while there is still some caring left between the two of you. If you play it out to the bitter end and leave your ex no choice but to hate you to get rid of you, you close the door to the future. Bowing out graciously leaves room for a future relationship with your ex, even if it is just as good friends.

4.Adhering to your curfew helps your parents to learn to trust you and your ability to do the right thing.

5.Having a curfew is a really good excuse to leave an uncomfortable situation (if you feel you need an excuse).

6.If your parents expect you home at a certain time and you do not arrive at home they can get help faster if you should need it - if they don't expect you home at all they are unlikely to get help until it is already too late.

7.Parents love you and worry when you aren't home (whether you like it or not) and your curfew allows them to get some sleep after you get home.

8.Having a curfew does not make you lame or a loser, most teens do have curfews even if they won't admit it.

9.Curfews imposed by your parents are not the same as the controversial city and state curfews - they are a matter of family courtesy, not public policy.

10.As much as you will hate to hear it - parental imposed curfews are for your own good!

5.Driver training is a good idea - people who get formal training are less likely to get in accidents or succumb to road rage.

6.Speeding is the number 1 cause of accidents in people under 21, alcohol or drug use is the second.

7.Contrary to popular myths that label women and minorities as bad drivers, the most dangerous group of drivers, statistically speaking, are males between 16 and 25.

8.Automobile accidents are the number 1 cause of death in teens - and it is suspected thatautomobiles are a suicide weapon of choice for youth, although this is hard to prove.

9.It is illegal to drive while impaired - be it from alcohol, drugs (legal and illegal), emotional stress or other causes.

10.For teens, the number of passengers in a car directly effect the likelihood of an accident - the more passengers, the more likely there will be an accident.
